Why take classes at CHESS?
Many homeschooling families in the Centreville area are discovering that they can energize their home education by connecting with the opportunities CHESS provides. What are some of the distinctive benefits of our group? To name a few
An extensive array of courses.
Does your student have interest or special talent in a specific academic subject? With a total of 48 classes, CHESS has opportunities for expanding young minds, even in the hard-to-teach subjects. Among our classes are the essential core disciplines such as English, and math from Algebra to Pre-Calculus, as well as unique electives like Journalism, Spanish, Mock Trial, and Technical Drafting.
A personal environment.
Classes at CHESS are small groups having between five and twelve students (the average size is eight). This means more personalized education. Students are encouraged to discuss the topics with their teachers and fellow students, contributing their thoughts, not just turning in homework. Teachers can adapt their teaching to better cultivate the individual student’s learning.
Expert instructors.
The teachers at CHESS are what makes us truly exceptional. Our teachers include public and private school teachers, tutors and private educators, and veteran homeschooling parents all with years of educating experience. Many of our teachers hold degrees in the fields in which they teach, others have careers or professional accomplishments in those fields all share a passion for the subjects they have chosen to teach, and for working within the homeschooling community. Flexible education plans.
At CHESS, students register for individual classes, not an entire program, which means families can tailor their education plan to their homeschool. Most families simply choose to supplement their homeschool with between one and four courses at CHESS, meaning the program is more adaptable to the homeschool.
Affordable tuition.
Private schools in the Centreville area charge tuition fees of approximately $6000 to $8000 per year. At CHESS, students can take a full 6-class credit load for around $2100 one-third the cost! CHESS maintains competitive rates with similar enrichment groups in the area.
Plus, CHESS offers tuition discounts. Families who register a student for two or more classes receive a 5% discount off their tuition cost. Families who register a second student receive an additional 5%! CHESS has even more opportunities to reduce your expenses: need-based scholarships and paid room-monitor positions are available. An experience community college can't give.
Community college puts students on a college pace, compressing a course into a semester instead of distributing it over a full academic year. The transcript grades at a community college are a permanent record generated by the college. CHESS, however, leaves control of education in the hands of the parents. All our teachers are Christians who support homeschoolers. (Don’t forget about the hidden cost of college textbooks.)
